Ovulation induction and intrauterine insemination is a combination of procedures.
This combination is used when treating sperm problems in the male or with donor sperm together with problems associated with absent of inadequate ovulation. Whenever induction of ovulation is used there is always the risk of multiple pregnancy, and this has to be factored into the treatment programme. The risks of having a multiple pregnancy can be reduced by careful dosage of medication, which induces ovulation coupled with careful monitoring of the cycle with blood tests and transvaginal ultrasound but can never be fully prevented. If prevention of multiple pregnancy is essential, then it may be better to undertake IVF and transfer a single embryo.
